Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! With Pressbooks, it’s quite simple to create and publish digital work, and then adjust and update it over time. As long as you maintain an active book subscription, you have access to add, edit, and adjust your content and to produce and distribute new export files. If your work is openly licensed, then Pressbooks will continue hosting the book even if you decide to end the subscription. To make further updates, you simply need to reactivate your subscription.

Yes. You can create file exports for your book at any time and distribute these exports however you wish. File export options include digital and print-ready PDFs, EPUB, XML, XHTML, and Common Cartridge.

Yes. Pressbooks includes several import options, including one for Word documents. Our user guide describes how to import these documents. The process is fairly straightforward if the document has been prepared correctly, though some documents may require manual formatting adjustments after they have been imported into Pressbooks.

Yes, you can embed images, audio and video files in Pressbooks, as well as other types of multimedia. For smaller media types (like images and some audio files), you can upload files directly to Pressbooks by adding them to your book’s media library. Larger files, like videos, should be uploaded to a dedicated media streaming service and then embedded in your book. There are storage limits to how much media content you can upload for your book (100MB for the free trial, 250MB for the Self-publisher plan, and 1GB for the Collaboration plan).

Yes. Pressbooks respects the rights of its creators, and allows you to download, distribute, and sell your book however you like. At present, there are no monetization options built directly into Pressbooks. Authors are free to produce PDF or EPUB exports and to sell or distribute them via a website, bookstore, or online marketplace. Pressbooks allows you to easily add links allowing readers to buy your work wherever you’ve made it available for purchase, but does not charge any royalties or take any percentage of your book sales.

ISBNs (International Standard Book Numbers) are unique product identifiers used by bookstores, publishers, libraries, and others in the book-selling trade. If you plan to sell your book, you will probably find it useful to have an ISBN for each of the formats in which your book will be sold (i.e. digital ebook and print). If you do not plan to sell your book, you don’t need an ISBN (many people publish open access books with Pressbooks, which don’t typically feature ISBNs). As an author or publisher, you can purchase an ISBN from the authorized ISBN agency for the country in which you operate. If you’ve been issued ISBNs for your book, you can enter them into Pressbooks using the Book Info tool.
