Collaborating to Enhance Accessibility: Improved PDF/Print Rendering of H5P Content in Pressbooks

As part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility and open-source collaboration, BCcampus and Pressbooks have partnered to significantly improve how interactive H5P activities are rendered in PDF and print formats. H5P—widely used to create interactive learning elements like quizzes, drag-and-drop activities, and flashcards—has become a staple in open textbooks. However, these elements have historically not translated well to print, leaving learners without reliable internet access at a disadvantage.

With funding from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, BCcampus brought on experienced developers to work closely with the Pressbooks team. Together, we co-developed new functionality that ensures H5P content is now rendered in a clear, accessible way in offline formats. This enhancement not only benefits BCcampus users but has been incorporated into the Pressbooks open-source core—extending its value to institutions and learners around the world.

This collaboration highlights the power of mission-aligned organizations working together to improve shared infrastructure, support diverse learner needs, and strengthen the open education ecosystem.
