Pressbooks Product Updates: Looking Back at 2025

Earlier this year, we began publishing regular release notes so our community could stay connected with what our team is building — from major feature launches to enhancements that make your authoring and publishing workflows smoother and more accessible.

In 2025, we shipped a wide array of updates designed to bring value to educators, authors, administrators, and learners alike. Below, you’ll find a recap of some of this year’s major milestones and monthly releases.

Pressbooks Results: Release and Improvements

After a successful pilot that concluded in December 2024, Pressbooks Results became generally available in January 2025, bringing powerful assessment support to educators using Pressbooks. This feature helps you send student scores from interactive H5P activities directly into your LMS gradebook, improving motivation, supporting instructional insight, and boosting learning outcomes.

There were many notable improvements to Pressbooks Results over the year, including open-ended response support, drill down visualization, fullscreen LTI view for learners, and an LTI and Results usage admin page for network managers and institutional managers.

Improved Print Rendering of H5P

We partnered with BCcampus to significantly enhance how H5P interactive content is rendered in PDFs and print formats, ensuring learners without reliable internet access aren’t left behind. With funding support from the Hewlett Foundation, this improvement has been integrated into the Pressbooks open-source core — amplifying impact across institutions and learners globally.

Accessibility Assist Author Tool

In November 2025 we launched the Pressbooks Accessibility Assist Author Tool, powered by Editoria11y. This new add-on helps authors identify common accessibility issues — like missing alt text and structural problems — and provides actionable suggestions directly within the editor. This tool marks the first release in our Content Toolkit designed to help authors publish quality content with Pressbooks.

Math Display Improvements

We made it easier for authors to write and display mathematical and scientific notation in Pressbooks using our built-in LaTeX/MathJax solution. Authors can now use additional LaTeX syntax, see better rendering across web, PDF, and EPUB formats, and rely on improved accessibility for equations and formulas.

Updated Terms of Service Plug-in

Updates to the Terms of Service plug-in improved how consent is presented and managed across Pressbooks networks. These changes help institutions ensure compliance while creating a more transparent and consistent experience for users.

Revamped, More Reliable Exports

We revamped the export routine to handle larger book exports and to be able to run in the background, letting you continue working while your book is processed. This makes exports faster, smoother, and more dependable across web, PDF, and EPUB formats.

Updated Accessibility Conformance Reports (VPATs)

We published updated VPAT reports for both the Pressbooks authoring platform and reading interface, developed in collaboration with the Inclusive Design Research Centre at OCAD University. These reports provide institutions with up-to-date documentation to support accessibility evaluations and procurement processes.

In addition to the Accessibility Assist Author Tool and print rendering of H5P content mentioned previously, there were many accessibility improvements over the year, including expanded accessible fonts, better screen reader support, and refined interface clarity.

Expanded Language Support

Pressbooks added support for additional languages — including Urdu, modern Hebrew, and Amharic — helping institutions better serve multilingual and international communities and making open publishing more inclusive.

New Privacy Controls for AI Indexing

A new robots privacy setting allows book creators and network managers to discourage AI indexing of their content. This gives institutions more control over how their work is discovered and used by automated systems.

Improved Fonts and Visual Customization

We added new customization options, including additional accessible fonts such as Atkinson Hyperlegible Next and enhanced header link color controls. These updates support better readability and give teams more flexibility in matching institutional branding.

OPDS Feed for Pressbooks Directory Metadata

The Pressbooks Directory now has a regularly-updated public OPDS feed that has been shared with discoverability partners. Open Publication Distribution System (OPDS) is a standard used to distribute, discover, and download electronic publications. It allows users to find, access, and download books from different sources.  We received requests from discoverability partners and some clients to make Pressbooks metadata available in this format.
