About This Role:

You will be involved in all aspects of UX/UI design for our software products and our sales & marketing resources. This will include researching user needs and preferences, developing beautiful, functional interfaces & experiences, and working with developers to implement your design ideas. 

You will report to the Product Manager, and work closely with the Head of Marketing to understand our design needs and product priorities. Your daily work will be guided by your participation in a cross-functional team practicing Scrum.

The product portfolio you will be designing for includes includes our marketing website; the Pressbooks Authoring & Editing platform, an intuitive WordPress-based authoring platform for books and other educational material; Pressbooks Directory, an extensive directory of free books and open educational resources (OER), and Pressbooks Results for LMS, which allows teachers to publish interactive learning material and send grade reports directly to a learning management system.

Anticipated projects in your first year could include improving the new user onboarding experience, redesigning our book catalog and webbook reading interfaces, and making Pressbooks Directory and our marketing site more beautiful and easier to navigate. 

About You:

You are an experienced UX/UI designer with a background in planning, designing, and implementing delightful web-based experiences for diverse humans. You’re committed to building accessible and inclusive interfaces using participatory, user-centered design processes. You have a well-developed design sense and are familiar with recent trends in modern front-end web development. You’re interested in book design, digital learning experiences, and open education/open-source software. You are excited about joining a highly cooperative team where continual learning, active listening and collaboration skills are essential parts of your work life.

Responsibilities:

In a typical sprint, you will spend your time 

  • learning about user needs and desires through formal and informal research,
  • designing and sharing wireframes and prototypes, 
  • collaborating on design ideas with colleagues, and
  • participating in Scrum meetings

Candidate Requirements:

  • Professional experience designing attractive and accessible web-based interfaces (demonstrated through a portfolio of previous work)
  • Extensive knowledge of user-centered, participatory, and/or community-led design practices
  • Proficiency with collaborative visual design and prototyping software (e.g. Figma, InVision, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar)
  • Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks and tools
  • Ability to communicate clearly with other team members in speech and writing
  • History of respectful, positive collaboration with others. Must practice active listening, curiosity, introspection, openness, empathy, honesty, and kindness

Desired Qualifications:

  • Degree or certification in UX/UI design, accessible & inclusive design, human-computer interaction, graphic design, web development, or a closely-related field
  • Experience conducting user research and producing user personas, user journey maps, and user stories.
  • Experience with book design, web/print publishing, higher education, and/or open licenses
  • Experience contributing to a culturally and linguistically-diverse team with permanently remote members
  • Previous contributions to an open source software project
  • Familiarity with WordPress themes and design conventions
