New Feature: Global Theme / Language Support

By |

We have always tried to support different languages for Pressbooks exports, and up until now we’ve had to implement pretty “hacky” solutions.

The problem is that in order to support certain languages, especially in PDF export, we need to include fonts for that language. We had no real standard way to do this — so we ended up building a handful of themes to support languages as requests came in: Korean, Japanese, Tamil, Traditional Chinese, Gujarati, and a few others.

In parallel, we have some clients who do theological scholarship, and needed, in quick succession, support for Coptic and Syriac scripts.

So, to do a better job of supporting any given language in any theme, we’ve created a new Theme Option called “Global Typography”, which will enable you to add support for various languages to any theme.

Please test it out (and, let us know if something is broken, or if there is a language you need support for).

How to add support for languages in Exports

1. Go to APPEARANCE >> THEME OPTIONS >> GLOBAL OPTIONS >> GLOBAL TYPOGRAPHY
2. Select the languages you wish to support in exports (if missing something, please get in touch)
3. Choose any theme
4. Export in all formats … and your language should be represented.

NOTE: There seems to be a bug in our testing of certain Kindles. If the language is not supported natively by Kindle, then some Kindles might have problems with the book in general.
