New! Customize Textbox Colors, Table Captions, and Other Improvements to Pressbooks

We’ve made a few tweaks and improvements to Pressbooks that we think you’ll be happy about!

Collapsible sections

First, the following themes now have an option to collapse subsections within a chapter in the webbook:

  • Asimov
  • Clarke
  • Jacobs
  • McLuhan

This will be particularly useful for books in which chapters contain many large subsections.

With subsections closed:

With subsections open:

To use this functionality, start every subsection within your chapter with an H1 header.

Then, go to Appearance > Theme Options > Web Options and check the box next to “Collapse sections within front matter, chapters, and back matter.” Please note that only sections under H1 headings will be collapsed.

To see how this looks, visit the chapter in your public webbook. You’ll see that book visitors now have the option to collapse sections of your chapter. This option is only applicable to the web view; the PDF and EBOOK exports will show all subsections as expanded.

Customizable textbox colors

In response to popular demand, we’ve added to the above-mentioned themes an option that lets you customize the colors of your textboxes universally throughout your book. You can set this under Appearance > Theme Options > Global Options.

Table captions

Table captions are back! Our improved Table Properties will allow you to add captions from the Visual Editor, without the need to edit the HTML code. Simply select your table, go to Table Properties, and check “Captions.” A space will appear in your table to insert the caption.

Comparison with source tool

Especially useful to Pressbooks users in Open Education, PressbooksEDU now comes with a built-in comparison tool that lets you compare the current version of a cloned book with its source.

This feature will only appear in cloned books, and can be found under Appearance > Theme Options > Web Options.

Enable source comparison

Once enabled, a button will be added at the bottom of each page (front matter, chapter, back matter) in the webbook, which will open the Comparison Tool.

Bug fixes

We also fixed some bugs. These included:

  • fixed the Web Theme Option for paragraph separation, which was not working correctly on the custom CSS theme;
  • fixed the internal links problem with some EPUB exports; and
  • fixed the part titles not showing up with the McLuhan theme.
