New Feature: MS Word Footnote converter

We have a few clients who make heavy duty academic texts on PressBooks, and we’ve made their life easier with a new MS Word footnote converter. The first “in-production” book they did with us had ~100 footnotes in every chapter: getting those footnotes out of MS Word format and into PressBooks format was a bit of a pain.

We now have a little tool that will do this for you…:

  1. Paste your Word doc/chapter with footnotes into PressBooks
  2. In the Visual Editor, find the little “window” icon beside “FN”
  3. Click that… footnotes should be converted

  1. Fantastic! I actually have a lot of comments/notes on mine too, and picking them out before pasting the text into pressbooks was a pain. This should make it easier.

    Thank you!

    • Hi! I don’t know if you still support this, but I’ve tried to insltal your plugin on Habari but I get a line that reads Attempted to load the plugin file footnotes.plugin.php , but it failed with syntax errors . May it be a compatibility issue with the 0.3.3 release, or is it just some trouble on my side?Thanks in advance.

  2. This is a very useful tool for us because the book we are converting has more than 1,500 footnotes. I have a couple of questions about how it works. First, does it number sequentially through the manuscript from beginning to end? Or does it go chapter by chapter?

    My second question is about how to remove the XE tags used in MS Word to generate an index. My footnotes are loaded with these tags, and I would like to either render them invisible or remove them.
    Thanks for your help.

  3. @Jschatz,

    ” First, does it number sequentially through the manuscript from beginning to end? Or does it go chapter by chapter?”

    it numbers chapter by chapter, with two output options:
    * footnotes
    * chapter endnotes

    re: xe tags, I’m not sure what will happen to them …
